The house where I was born.
In the house, at this location, I was born on January 5th 1942. My eldest sister Isabella (Bella) was born here also. She died when she was 10mths old. In March 1942 the Japanese invaded Sumbawa. My father was betrayed to the Japanese by his friend the Sultan of Sumbawa, Kacharudin. My mother escaped with me to Ampenan, Lombok.

My mother's war-time dwelling.
My mother hid us in Ampenan.in the kampung. I had red hair which betrayed my father's white descent. For that reason I was raised as a baby with only the Indonesian language. Japanese soldiers paraded in the streets of Ampenan and Lombok. I became their mascotte, they always joked "Rambut merah, potong leher" (Red hair, we cut your throats)... and I always laughed, I never understood... My mother was a teacher in the village and so kept us both alive.

Our first living quarters after WWII.
When the war ended my mother, in Ampenan, looked for my father. Ship captains told her that they had heard he was in Pare-Pare. My father was taken from Sumbawa to Tana Toraja as a prisoner of war. They had broken his tail-bone but not his spirit. Liberated by the Australians he was put in charge for redistribution of Japanese confiscated goods among the local people. He was stationed in Pare-Pare when my mother found him. Here we lived in our first post war house in Jalan Galesong. My mother educated me at home because there was no school. In this place also my younger sister Lily was born.

Our house in Makassar
My father promoted to Harbour chief of Makassar with the K.P.M. (Royal Dutch Packetlines) in 1947. So we moved from Pare-Pare to Makassar. After a short time President Soekarno requested help from the K.P.M. He wanted a national shipping company. The K.P.M. sent my father for the job, fully convinced that he would fail (they did not want national competition). My father founded Indonesia's first shipping company in Makassar on a shoestring, the M.K.S.S. (Maskapai Kapal Sulawesi Selatan). Starting out with no boats he managed owning 3 ships within 1 year, and all cargoes from Sulawesi ran through him. The K.P.M. felt upset and wanted him back, but the Indonesian Government insisted he'd stay. To avoid complications my father was sent to Holland on fully paid furlough for a year in 1949, Mohammed Hata (vice president) was upset because of this, but the K.P.M. made believe that my father no longer worked for them. That is how the K.P.M. cheated the Indonesian Government and my father got his first foreign furlough. Before we left Makassar my father was given a beautiful Kendari silver filigrain desktop cigarette box by the M.K.S.S. personnel.

The house of Ecka Wahr in Amsterdam
When my father got his first foreign leave we first stayed in the house of my father's elder sister, Ecka. Ecka had been married and divorced with the Dutch general Mollinger. She then staid in the Apollolaan in Amsterdam. We stayed there only 2 months, then my parents found another place to stay, in the village of Nunspeet.

Our rented house in Nunspeet
We moved from big city Amsterdam to little village Nunspeet. Nunspeet was a quiet village where its inhabitants were friendly to us. My mother gave birth to my twin brothers in Amsterdam in 1949. So in Nunspeet we lived with my parents, my sister Lilly and the twins Leo (Doedel) and Richard (Pukkel). I remember 2 young girls from the neighbourhood always coming by after school. They wanted to play with the twins, carrying them around in their arms. For me village life in Nunspeet was unusual. I saw my first snow, for the first time wearing shoes (in Indonesia I was mostly bare feet in the streets). The local kids took me around to the soccerfield teaching me how to play soccer. A brand new world surrounded me. The last few months of our leave we stayed in Amsterdam.

We stayed the Beethovenstraat
The last few months of our leave we stayed in Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam. We lived on the 2nd floor with a Dutch family where we rented rooms. The elderly couple had a 24-year old son who had a girlfriend. One day the father walked into our room, with a piece of pudding on his bald head, shouting "Mrs. Wahr look what my son has done!". It appeared that he had caught his son in the bedroom with his girlfriend in a position not appropriate for those times. They had a fight and his son told him not to interfere and finally emptied a pudding (they were having diner) on top of his father's head. I'll never forget that incident! In Amsterdam I was often called names by other kids, like: "pinda chinees, pinda lekka lekka", pointing to my descent from the East. I was upset, but was afraid to fight those big guys. My father gave me a choice: "You go and hit them or I will hit you at home; I hit harder". So I threw myself at in fights and surprisingly usually won (they never expected me to do anything). At home I was rewarded with extra pocket money!

Makassar again
After our Dutch leave the K.P.M. stationed my father again in Makassar as a sub-agent because the Dutch agent at that time had been threatened to death by local nationalists. My father was a mixture of Swiss and Minahasa and my mother was full-blooded Minahasa. So they both gained respect from the local population. After a short while when things calmed down my father was promoted to become the K.P.M. agent in Timor Koepang So we moved again.

Our house in Timor Koepang
When we arrived in Timor Koepang, ending 1950, it was a hot and desolate little harbour town. My father was the Agent for the K.P.M. My mother had many social obligations. There was only me and my sister, and she was still small. I spent some of the best years of my youth here. I was 6 years old and had a free life of swimming in the sea, diving for corals with village kids, gang fights with catapults, climbing trees in the woods. A perfect life. Here in Timor Koepang my youngest brother, Eddie Brian, was born in 1952. My mother was on the pill, but it had not worked, resulting in Eddie's birth. When my mother was giving birth to Eddie, my father was gambling at the local Pasar Malam in the evening. He had a winning streak playing a game called Fan-tan and they had to drag him away to our house, he wouldn't leave. Eddie was almost named Fan-Tan! I left many happy footsteps and memories here as a child until we moved to Bali beginning 1953.

Our house in Buleleng
My father was stationed in Buleleng in 1953. Buleleng was the main harbour town of Bali in those days, close by Singaradja, thne it's largest city. We had a wonderful time in Buleleng. Bali was great, even greater than it is today. Everything was still very native, no tourists. If we wanted to go to southern Bali, Den Pasar, it took us almost 12 hours by jeep. We had to drive through thick woods, by Kintamani over the mountain top, with many monkeys in the middle of the roads. The Balinese carvings that you saw were incredibly beautiful, not yet mass production. My mother bought hand painted sarongs and jewelry from one of the royal houses in need of money. And we obtained many wood carvings and paintings which we brought with us on our further journeys in Indonesia. Bali was wonderful. I experienced first hand the local magic. Predictions by magicians that all came true later. Spirits that surrounded usw and all local magic of Bali. We only stayed 6 months in Buleleng and then my father was transfered again to Makassar where great problems doomed for the K.P.M.

Our 3rd house in Makassar
When we arrived in Makassar for the 3rd time it had become a noisy city with many problems. The nationalists (Plopors, from outside Makassar) were trying to drive out the Dutch. My father had to replace the Dutch agent because he was threatend to death. Due to my parent's descent (both had roots in Minahasa) my father managed to control the turbulence. He had help from the local military top who were almost all from the Minahasa and whom all knew the Warokka and Walsen-Tambajong family lines (from both my parents) in the Minahasa. Times were rough. Lower rank military soldiers often did not know my parents. So it would happen that my father's car was confiscated by a soldier, and then returned by the military Captain later in the day. One of the Dutch Agents became insane because of the developments and tried killing his wife in our house, chasing her with a knife! I heard the shrieking and shouting and saw his wife running in our room, all bloodied. The man was transfered back to Holland. Then the K.P.M. wanted my father to take full charge of Makassar, which he refused because my father told him so: "Why should you take responsibility, when they don't want to give you full authority and compensations?". My father was a locally hired person, not a highly educated person of standing from Holland. Locals were never allowed a top position with all its benefits, like foreign leave. My father was called to Jakarta, to the head office. Prior to that he was given advice by a local "orang pintar" (witch doctor), to look his boss in Jakarta between his eyes and stand by his demand, full authority and compensations equal to Dutch expatriates. My father did so in Jakarta. He stared the Director right between the eyes and stood by his demands. He was then placed in charge of Tanjung Priok, the Jakarta harbour, for 6 months, as a test. Afterwards my mothers background was scrutinized, to see if she was fit to become the wife of an agent with all it's social obligations. And then my father was officially appointed Head Agent for Eastern Indonesia, stationed in Makassar, including all the benefits and perks of a Dutch national (my father had the British nationality, being born in Hong Kong from a Swiss father and Minahasa mother). The first (and only) time such a position was forgiven to a locally hired person. All the ship captains and shore personnel were informed and all K.P.M. ships in Indonesia hooted their horns in a salute at the same time. And then life became tougher. We had armed gards in front of our house. And there were kidnap threats. Eventually it became very serious and my mother was sent to Manado, in the Minahasa, with my 3 younger brothers and my sister. And I was placed on a ship, the Sigli, under charge of the captain to take me out of sight, to Fremantle (Perth) in Australia. Thus I was kept out of sight during the kidnap scare. My father remained in Makassar alone, with our faithful servants Riwu, Annus and Lina who took care of him. When the scare died down the K.P.M. awarded my father a 1 year fully paid leave to Holland with the family, and 10.000 guilders bonus for his services as the head agent for East Indonesia. My mother and I, with my 3 brothers and my sister, went by boat, the Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, to Amsterdam by route of The Canal, Port Said. My father followed later by airplane.

I lived and worked her for 6 months.
As an 18-year old I worked here in this place, representing my father's company, just before Nigeria's independence. Only 11 foreigners lived here, and I was the youngest. When indepenence came I escaped local nationalists, who hated foreigners, by jeep in the middle of the night. Driving to Lagos.
